España, 2022. Los jóvenes pasamos las horas entre Instagram, el trabajo y las cañas. Mientras, navegamos a la deriva arrastrados por una pandemia y una crisis económica-climática a nivel global. Memes sobre el fin del mundo, la ansiedad en el trabajo y las relaciones tóxicas se viralizan en las redes sociales.

Nuestro desarrollo personal viene marcado por una infancia y adolescencia en una sociedad desconectada, más lenta, donde los valores tradicionales aún se mantenían - y una realidad nueva, digital-capitalista, en la que parece que todo es posible, pero ni las ideas ni las relaciones duran más de dos telediarios.

Este proyecto pretende representar los pensamientos más íntimos de una juventud que intenta hacerlo lo mejor que puede. Una juventud con ganas de experimentar, de vivir y de conectar consigo mismos y con otras personas. Una juventud con una mayor conciencia de clase, que ha empezado a desaprender los dogmas y comportamientos racistas, sexistas y homófobos. Una juventud que, al contrario de la mayoría de sus padres, es más consciente que nunca de la importancia de la salud mental y los autocuidados. Una juventud que tiene infinitas posibilidades para desarrollarse intelectual y personalmente.

Una juventud que, sin embargo, se ve atrapada por las tareas domésticas diarias en sus pisos compartidos, un trabajo de 9 a 5 que igual requiere un par de horas extra y una aplicación para ligar en la que las personas se han convertido en perfiles que descartar y dejar olvidados en un cajón.

En una sociedad en la que las relaciones efímeras y el fast-dating son la norma, donde el trabajo ocupa la mayor parte de tu tiempo y estás cosido a un móvil que te absorbe,

¿Cómo puedes centrarte en lo que de verdad te importa?

Y sobre todo, ¿Cómo sabes que es para ti 'lo que de verdad importa'?

Capitalism, tinder and launderettes: a wild portrait of a hyper- connected youth

It’s 2022. Youngsters are trying hard to navigate the post-pandemic scenario, a global economic and climate crisis and the fear for war. Memes about toxic relationships, anxiety and work exploitation go viral on social media.

Young people today were raised in a slower and disconnected world, where traditional values were highly reinforced. We then transitioned into a new digital-capitalist reality. In this new scenario, they’ve promised us we’ve got a whole lot of opportunities and anything is possible when we work hard enough to get it. In practice, we’re flooded with too much information and consumerism has conquered our relationships with ourselves and other people.

On the other hand, there’s a silver lining: we’re more aware than ever of the importance of mental health. We’re becoming less racist and homophobic as we embrace diversity and inclusion. We’re also working towards smashing the patriarchy. However, we’re still spiraling in our 9 to 5 jobs as we wonder about the last time our match ghosted us. We are also overwhelmed by thousands of opportunities we could be taking as our time and attention are over capacity.

Based on all this drama, I put together a little something to share with you some open questions I got in mind. 

This project represents the most intimate thoughts of a young society. This project is  about you and me. This project is about doing the laundry at 10pm while listening to a podcast from an old rich man telling you all about how he built his successful business out of scratch. This project is about your Tinder count and the shitty emotional advice you’re getting from social media. This project is about how to translate humour, art and feminism into a form of activism that makes us laugh at how things are and wonder about how we could improve them in the future. This project is pop, old-school and forward-thinking. This project is Spanish magic realism.

Now it’s time to take a step forward and deep dive into the tiny little worlds I built for you. And maybe ask yourself: 

In the current scenario, 

How might we focus on what really matters? 

And most importantly, how might we find out what really matters to us personally?
