For the second time, Spanish artists Berni Puig and Mateu Targa are in a residency program together. This time instead of working parallel they decided to collaborate and share canvases overcoming their signature styles and ego.
During four weeks the artists work in B-Murals’ studio, sharing space with german artist Julia Benz.

Por segunda vez, los artistas españoles Berni Puig y Mateu Targa están juntos en un programa de residencia. Esta vez, en lugar de trabajar en paralelo, decidieron colaborar y compartir lienzos superando sus estilos y egos característicos.
Durante cuatro semanas los pintores trabajan en el estudio de B-Murals, compartiendo el espacio con la artista alemana Julia Benz.
Los dos artistas comparten el antagonismo en sus respectivos estilos pictóricos: Puig con su abstracción reduccionista a formas geométricas con colores planos, y Targa con su estilo pictórico pleno y realista que recuerda al impresionismo. Han trabajado juntos en diferentes ocasiones, intentando fusionar los dos estilos en un mismo soporte, combinándolos y buscando un diálogo.
Para esta residencia se propone seguir con esta investigación formal para llegar a un entendimiento. Se seguirán combinando imágenes con referentes fotográficos para aplicar los elementos gráficos que se refieran a la fotografía a través de colores, formas, texturas...
The two artists share the antagonism in their respective pictorial styles: Puig with his reductionist abstraction to geometric forms with flat colours, and Targa with his full, realistic pictorial style reminiscent of impressionism. They have worked together on different occasions, trying to merge the two styles in a single medium, combining them and seeking a dialogue.
For this residency, it is proposed to continue with this formal research in order to reach an understanding. We will continue to combine images with photographic references in order to apply graphic elements that refer to photography through colours, shapes, textures...
“Como pintor abstracto, Berni Puig ha desarrollado su propio estilo pictórico específico en los últimos 15 años, pero experimentará con la pintura figurativa durante su estancia con Mateu Targa en Barcelona. Basándose en momentos aparentemente triviales, llevan al lienzo instantáneas cargadas de emoción. A través de sus conversaciones y de un enfoque estructurado, las personas y sus antecedentes cobran vida con cada pincelada. Los espectadores experimentan los momentos que conmueven a los artistas y pueden llegar a estar más atentos a su entorno en el futuro. “

“As an abstract painter, Berni Puig has developed his own specific painting style in the past 15 years but will experiment with figurative painting during his time with Mateu Targa in Barcelona. Based on seemingly trivial moments they bring emotionally loaded snapshots on canvas. Through their conversations and a structured approach people and their backgrounds come to life with every brush stroke. The viewers get to experience the moments that move the artists and might become more attentive to their surroundings in the future.”

Tomando como punto de partida fotografías analógicas de sus fiestas conjuntas en el Konvent de Berga, los dos artistas siguen usando la imagen con referente para aplicar los elementos gráficos a través de la abstracción de Berni.
Durante estas cuatro semanas, han ido investigando la técnica para romper con sus normas propias, intercambiando papeles y estilos, buscando homogeneidad y formas de potenciar las habilidades de cada uno. A través de este proceso de humildad, los dos artistas han logrado encontrar pistas para, a partir de dos lenguajes distintos, crear un tercero.
En las obras presentadas, Berni y Mateu juegan con el concepto de la censura para desviarlo. La placidez de los elementos abstractos empujan la mirada hacia los contornos del marco, donde el espectador descubre un pecho, botellas de alcool y otros elementos tradicionalmente objetos de censura.
Después de su residencia con B-Murals, Berni Puig y Mateu Targa han sido seleccionados como colectivo para representar Cataluña en el festival Calle Libre en Vienna.
As a referent, the two artists chose to use analogue photographs of their joint parties at the Konvent in Berga, to which they apply graphic elements via Berni's abstraction.
During these four weeks, they have been investigating the technique in order to break with their own rules, exchanging roles and styles, looking for homogeneity and ways to enhance each other's skills. Throughout this process of humility, the two artists have managed to create a new third from two different languages.
In the works presented, Berni and Mateu play with the concept of censorship in order to deflect it. The placidity of the abstract elements pushes the gaze towards the contours of the frame, where the viewer discovers a breast, bottles of alcohol and other elements that are traditionally censured.
After their residency with B-Murals, Berni Puig and Mateu Targa have been selected as a collective to represent Catalonia at the Calle Libre Festival in Vienna.
